Notes:

(1) Community hospitals include all non-federal, short-term general and specialty hospitals whose facilities and services are available to the public in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.

(2) Beginning in 2004, data on the number of urban and rural hospitals were collected using updated coding methods to align with revised wage area designations established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
