Chart 2.2: Number of Beds and Number of Beds per 1,000 Persons in Community Hospitals, 2005-2023

Source: : Analysis of American Hospital Association Annual Survey data, 2005 to 2023, for community hospitals. U.S. Census Bureau: International Database of Population Estimates, 2023 Source
Notes:
(1) Community hospitals include all non-federal, short-term general and specialty hospitals whose facilities and services are available to the public in the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
(2) U.S. population estimates used as denominators to calculate per 1,000 counts were traditionally rounded to the nearest thousand prior to 2000, consistent with historical U.S. Census Bureau reporting practices. Earlier editions of the TrendWatch Chartbook followed this convention. Beginning with 2000, the Census Bureau began publishing unrounded population estimates; accordingly, figures for 2000 and later in this edition use unrounded estimates. To maintain consistency with official sources, estimates for 1999 and earlier continue to reflect rounded values. See here and here
